12/1/06 -
Wave is completed. I drew a grid to guide my mermaid tiles
so they would all face north-west. Each piece of tile was cut in half and/or
quartered to create the fade away effect my client desired.

12/4/06 - In the tail detail I've used
the darker colors of my mermaid palate to emphasize the fade away
effect. On the inside of the tail, I picked up the richer coral
colors that are used in her bust area and incorporated a
coral colored china with little squares to add additional detail and
uniqueness. Mirror and bronze vitreous glass complete the tail
detail.
Notice in the wave how the green
strip in the middle was cut in half. This is because it was
thicker than my 3/4" tiles in some places. I wanted
to eliminate the problem of ending up with a 1/8th inch slice of tile
in some areas.

Here's a close up of my lettering work. The tile is a
vitreous glass called Brillante #270 and has a beautiful gold vein
running through it. It has proven
difficult to work with because 1) it is glass and brittle and 2)
the back of the tile has pronounced ridges which fight nipping in a
different direction. The design in each piece of tile runs in different directions which I'll show you in later
pages. So the tile is hand picked for brilliance and consistent
direction. Here I've tried to stagger my joints and chosen a very vertical line since my
tile next to it will be mostly horizontal and then curving upwards. |

This is "Mirrorball," a yellow-throated warbler
that has visited us two winters now. He's been looking at his
reflection in the two-way mirror glass all morning. He got
his name when he discovered my Sphere covered with mirror
and would jump up and down and hit his beak with it
consistently. He's a very friendly little bird and will let
you get quite close to him.
